Unit 8: A Successful Transition

Succeeding in the
new job

While this is not a long unit, it contains some very important concepts and requires some challenging activities. When working with a group, it is useful to discuss the issues raised in this unit with the whole group as soon as the first participant receives a job offer.

The unit covers:
• Evaluating job offers and choosing between them
• Negotiating the right conditions
• Accepting and declining job offers and resigning from the current job
• Strategies to increase the likelihood of success in the new job

Preparation for the final section, ‘Succeeding in the new job’, should ideally start being discussed well before it becomes necessary. Too many otherwise top performers make shaky starts in new positions through being over-zealous and concentrating on being ultra-efficient when their top priority should be becoming a good member of the team.

Estimated Time Required: 1 hour
Learner Outcomes:
  1. evaluate job offers and make an informed decision as to which would be better for your future

  2. negotiate the right conditions

  3. accept and decline job offers and write a letter of resignation

  4. understand how to maximise the likelihood of succeeding in the new job
